Donald used to brag to his drinking pals how he could keep a challenging and full-time job and get drunk as a skunk almost every night. Unfortunately, after continuing this unhealthy lifestyle for approximately two years, he started to notice various alcohol related difficulties.

For instance, he had a very difficult time getting up for work because he felt so sleepy when he awoke. Moreover, almost every morning Donald experienced a painful hangover. In a word, the mixture of his lack of energy and his hangovers did not make it easy for him to get up and feel like he wanted to go to work. To add fuel to the fire, he recently got his third drunk driving citation in the past nine months.

To compound things further, at work his last two work evaluations were less than tolerable. And finally, his six-and-a-half-year relationship with his girlfriend had worsened due to his financial difficulties, lack of patience, angry outbursts, and his depression.

Even though Donald was only twenty-five years old, he simply started to look like he was in his mid thirties. Regrettably, this is what abusive and excessive drinking can do to an individual. And from a realistic perspective he realized that he was going through the negative consequences of alcohol abuse or alcoholism and that he was too young to give up his life to irresponsible drinking. So initially he tried to drink in moderation. Unfortunately, he soon understood that he lost all control after having his first drink. Due to the fact that this was an event that was repeated virtually every time he drank, this obviously concerned him a great deal. In fact, he started to wonder if he was manifesting some of the stages of alcoholism.

After talking about his alcohol drinking problems and his careless and irresponsible drinking with his lady friend, he finally decided to schedule an appointment to see his family doctor. When Donald saw his family doctor, he sincerely stated that he has been abusing alcohol, that he may be manifesting behavior that is representative of the various alcoholism stages, and that he wants to stop drinking. He then declared that drinking responsibly and in moderation does not seem to work for him and as a consequence, he wants to learn how he can live without drinking alcohol.

Donald also told his doctor about his depression and how this mental health issue was negatively affecting his relationship with his girlfriend. His healthcare practitioner referred Donald to Doctor DeRosa, an alcohol and drug addiction therapist, who inspired Donald to enroll in an alcohol and drug rehab center as an in-patient for alcohol detox and alcohol rehab. Fortunately, Donald would also be able to get treatment for his depression at this treatment center.

After three months of rigorous rehabilitation, Donald left the residential rehab center and continued his recovery via outpatient counseling and via going to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Inspired to change his life in a healthier way, Donald joined a gym and started working out three or four times per week. Within six months Donald was a new man. He was in shape, he was eating nutritious meals, he was not depressed anymore, and most important of all, he remained sober for numerous months. He also did not resort to angry outbursts, he became more patient, and he became a more compassionate person in his relationship with his girlfriend. Stated briefly, abstaining from drinking was the best decision Donald had ever made.
